The 7-team PEI Midget AAA Hockey League gets underway on Tuesday night when the Mid-Isle Robert's Petro Canada Matrix open up the season playing host to the Kings County Kings at 7:30 at the APM Centre. Head Coach, Mike Lord, says that the Matrix are "looking forward to another great year and hope to end the season with one more playoff win than last year." The Matrix lost in the finals last season. "However, to do that it will be up to a completely different cast of players as we only have 6 returning players," he added.

On Thursday night, the three-time defending Island Champion and two-time defending Atlantic Champion, Charlottetown OK Tire Abbies will open up their season at Cody Banks Arena against the Sherwood Falcons. "Expectations are to build off our success from the last two seasons and have another deep run in the playoffs," says Abbies manager Kevin Ramsay. "There are ten returning players from last year. We think we have a very balanced team from the net out. Key players to watch are forwards, Ryan Cassidy, Parker Diamond and Ben Buchanan."

With a new coaching staff, a good mix of returning players, and an influx of first year midgets fresh off a Bantam AAA finals appearance, Sherwood is looking to be one of the most improved teams this season. "Lead offensively by Brandon Birt and Matt McQuaid, defensively by Mike Callaghan, and in nets with Lucas Currie, Sherwood will be a team that is tough to play against this season," says coach, Craig Foster.

On Saturday night, the Abbies will have their home opener against Summerside, while the Western Regals will get their season started while entertaining the Falcons in Alberton. "With a heart breaking loss last year in the playoffs," says coach Mitch Hardy, "we are hoping to get off to a good start to the regular season. With only five returning players it will be tough, but the boys will be up for the challenge."

The Pownal Red Devils will visit the Summerside Hemphill GM Capitals the following night at Credit Union Place. Pownal is expecting to bounce back to the top of the standings this season. Returning forwards Brent MacKinnon and Fraser Dylan Atkinson will take on leadership roles in a young group of speedy forwards. Logan MacKinnon and Tyler Baker will be the backbone of the team's defense, accompanied by a few up-and-coming graduates of last season's Island champion Bantam AAA team.

The Capitals will be looking to the leadership of third year players Tyson Phillips, Marc Palmer, Cody Carmicheal, Alex Forrest, and Stephen Holland. Strong play from second year and first year players will be the key to the Capitals' success this year. "We are small but we have a can-do attitude'', states head coach Mary-Lynn Forrest. Coaching staff Brock Price, Jamie Rodgerson, Kevin MacRae and manager Keith Palmer would like to congratulate the boys on their recent win of the Kyle Gallant Memorial Tournament.

The first week wraps up with the Kings County Kings hosting the Regals at the Northumberland Arena. The Kings will play all of their home games in Murray River this season. They split between Montague and Souris last year.
