Season Begins Saturday

The seven-team PEI Midget AAA Hockey League gets underway on Saturday afternoon when the Charlottetown Brighton Construction Abbies host the two-time defending champion Western Regals at 1:30 at Simmons.

"We will be a hardworking team in all three areas of the ice", says head coach, Jason Smallman. "Key players to watch are Silas Handrahan and Brayden Arsenault up front, Chance Pitre on defence, and Bronson Banks returning in goal."

On Monday night, the Regals will visit the Pownal Gaudet's Auto Body Red Devils at 8:05 in Pownal.

On Tuesday night the Abbies will visit the Mid-Isle Matrix at 7:30 at the APM Centre. Matrix head coach, Mitch Gallant says that "with only six returning players, we still have high expectations with a strong presence from the South Side's association and some speedy first-year Midget eligible players. We expect forward Daniel Collister to play a key role this season and rely on defenceman Kurtis Green to anchor the blueline."

The Sherwood Drug Mart Falcons and Summerside Hemphill GM Capitals get their seasons started with a matchup at 7:45 at Credit Union Place. The Falcons will have five returning seniors this season in defencemen Hunter Boudreau, Andrew Dillon and Cory Ramsay along with forwards Nathan Molyneaux and Matt Sinnott. With this core leadership Head Coach Mike McTague feels that the prospects for this season are to establish a team that is disciplined, defensively responsible and cohesive.

The Kings County Kings will travel to Sherwood on Thursday night for an 8:20 start at Cody Banks Arena to wrap up the first full week of season play. The Kings are looking forward to a fresh start in a new home ice in Georgetown on Friday nights at 8:00 PM. With a talented group of forwards; including Blake Jamieson, Spencer Compton, Spencer Arsenault, Eddie Jenkins, Nathan Cahill and Matt MacLaren & returning netminder Jed Walsh the Kings are poised to significantly improve upon last years results.

The 30-game regular season will conclude on February 13 with the playoffs to follow. New this season will be an inter-locking schedule with the New Brunswick Minor Midget AAA league. The NB teams will travel to PEI for games the weekend of October 24th and 25th. The PEI teams will travel to NB December 5th and 6th.
