LAKE PLACID, N.Y. - The Summerside Hemphill GM Capitals could not have written a more dramatic finish to the Can-Am international hockey tournament here over the weekend. The Capitals edged the St. Lawrence Thunder from New York 3-2 in Sunday morning's final.
Blake Ozon scored the tying goal with three seconds remaining in regulation time and, then with the teams playing a 4-on-4 two-minute overtime period, Tyler Peters scored the winning goal with two seconds remaining in the first extra session to give the Caps the midget AAA under-18 title. Tyson Phillips also scored for the Capitals, who received one assist from Ryan Collicutt. The Capitals trailed 2-0 after the first period and 2-1 following two. Nathan Ferrish earned the goaltending win.
The Capitals went 3-1 (won-lost) in round-robin play and finished in a three-way tie with the Thunder and Shamrock Elite from Massachusetts. The top two teams earned berths in the final, and the Caps were awarded first place based on fewest goals-against in the round robin - 6.
The Capitals played all their games at Herb Brooks Memorial Arena - site of the men's hockey competition in the 1980 Winter Olympics.
