SUMMERSIDE, PEI, March 21, 2010 - The Charlottetown OK Tire Abbies are Atlantic Minor Midget AAA hockey champions for the second straight year. The Abbies, Prince Edward Island champions, defeated the host Summerside Hemphill GM Capitals 5-3 in the gold-medal game Sunday afternoon at Credit Union Place.
The all PEI final was played in front of an estimated crowd of 900 fans.
"We have 20 guys who believed in themselves all year", said Abbies head coach Mike White. "We are pretty proud of ourselves. We lost a lot of guys last year. I knew the group we had. It's all about the players - they really deserve it."
The Abbies had nine returnees and lost 11 players from last year.
The Abbies were led by the line of Ryan Cassidy (3-1), Parker Diamond (1-2) and Conor McAleer (0-1) who combined for eight points. Cassidy, most valuable player in the round-robin scored three goals and assisted on another, Diamond scored one and assisted on two and McAleer contributed an assist. Ben Buchanan scored the other goal for Charlottetown and chipped in with an assist.

"That's the line we've been counting on all year," said White. "I can't say enough about that line and every other kid."
Tyler Doyle, Jeff MacFarlane and Ryan Collicutt replied for the Capitals. Ryan MacArthur had an assist as did Doyle.
The Abbies built period leads of 2-1 and 4-2 and never trailed in the final.
Cassidy and MacFarlane were selected as the players of the game.
Charlottetown outshot the hosts 36-29.
The New Brunswick champion Fredericton Capitals edged the Nova Scotia champion Antigonish Bulldogs 6-4 in the bronze medal game. They were the same two teams that played for the bronze medals a year ago with the same end result.
David Brewer had four goals and two assists to lead Fredericton. Matt Wright and Liam MacDonald also scored for the Caps.
Rod Greencorn, James Williams, Mitch Gammon and Colby Van Oirschot answered for Antigonish.
Brewer and Williams were players of the game.
The teams were tied 1-1 after the first period, but Fredericton led 5-3 after 40 minutes.
Joshua LeBrun earned the goaltending decision. Shots on goal: 43 - 28 for Fredericton..
