Chris Nilan to Speak at League Banquet
Posted By: admin
Monday, January 15, 2018

We are pleased to announce a very special guest as our keynote speaker for our 2018 PEI Midget AAA Hockey League Awards Banquet. When approached to join us, Chris Nilan not only graciously accepted, but he did so with enthusiasm and clearly stated he is looking forward to sharing his stories and messages to all in the room.

The league banquet will be Sun., Feb. 11th at 5pm at the Stratford Town Hall (234 Shakespeare Dr.) in Stratford.

Nilan grew up in a tough part of Boston where he says he had to keep his head up every day to survive. He overcame those everyday obstacles and others to play 13 years in the National Hockey League, most of them as one of the most popular Montreal Canadiens of all time. During his NHL career, he had over 200 points and "fought them all" racking up over 3000 penalty minutes, resulting in a league record of an average over 4 minutes per game. In 1991 he had a bad night (or a good one as he describes it) breaking the most penalty minutes in a game record that was owned by PEI's Forbes Kennedy before that! He played for Team USA in the 1987 Canada Cup, he was named to the NHL All-star game in 1991 and he won a Stanley Cup in 1987.
Chris had a colourful career but his biggest fight in life game after hockey when he increased his drinking and got hooked on pain medication. These habits lead to heroin use and almost any other hard substance he could get into his body. With this, came the lowest of low times including a very near death experience. It was while he was in a ditch wondering how he was still alive that he decided he had to change his lifestyle or soon die.
From that point onward, he has been drug and alcohol free. He now has his own radio show in Montreal and he tours the nation and beyond making public appearances and speaking engagements. On the ice he was obviously a force to be reckoned with and his message is just as powerful. He played with as much or more passion than any player in the history of the game and he delivers many stories similar to all the ones above the same way.
The following link is the trailer of "The Last Gladiators", a movie that provides much insight into his life https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wv9UAmA0RJA.
